Jersey to Launch Modern Digital Intellectual Property Register from 1 August 2026 – Preparatory Guidance Now Available
The Jersey Financial Services Commission (JFSC) has published new guidance to help businesses and individuals prepare for the launch of a fully digital Intellectual Property (IP) Register.
From 1 August 2026, Jersey will introduce a modernised, online-first IP registration system. This replaces the current outdated framework and moves the island to a primary registration model under the new Trade Marks (Jersey) Law 2026.
The changes aim to reduce red tape, speed up processes, and make it easier for companies and creators to protect trademarks, patents, and designs directly in Jersey.
This is a significant modernisation for Jersey's registry services.
While the new system promises clearer processes and digital efficiency, businesses with existing IP rights should review the transitional rules promptly to avoid any gaps in protection. Further operational guidance on the myIPO portal is still awaited.
What is changing?
Jersey is replacing its existing IP registration system with a new digital platform called myIPO. Key features include:
- Fully online applications, management, and searching of IP rights.
- Direct filing in Jersey (no longer heavily reliant on prior UK registration).
- A phased rollout:
- 1 August 2026 — Core trade mark services launch.
- 15 September 2026 (expected) — International trade mark services.
- 1 November 2026 (expected) — Patent and design services.
Existing trade mark registrations will automatically transfer to the new register on 1 August 2026, with special transitional rules for marks due to expire around the launch date.
New Guidance Published (8 July 2026)
To help users prepare, the JFSC has released a suite of updated webpages covering:
- What intellectual property is and why it matters.
- How to choose and protect a trade mark in Jersey.
- The step-by-step trade mark application process via the new myIPO portal.
- Practical FAQs (including who can apply, what can be registered, timelines, costs, and use of ™ and ® symbols).
- Detailed transitional provisions explaining how existing Jersey trade marks will move to the new system.
Important: Fees for the new services are still subject to final confirmation following a recent consultation.
What should businesses do now?
- Review the new guidance if you own, or plan to register, trade marks, patents, or designs in Jersey.
- Check the transitional provisions page if you have existing Jersey trade mark registrations — especially if any are due to expire in late 2026 or early 2027.
- Prepare application information in advance (clear mark representation and accurate Nice classification of goods/services).
- Watch for further guidance on using the myIPO portal, which is expected closer to launch.
