History repeats itself, and yet we do not learn from history.

The German philosopher Georg Hegel famously said,

  • "The only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history."

So the question we must ask ourselves today is this: can we afford to learn nothing from history? That particular choice becomes evident when we remember the words of Martin Luther King Jr, who said,

  • "We are not makers of history. We are made by history."

Today we must decide how history will make and remake us, how history will shape and reshape our world, and how history will see and remember us.
