Hackers Seize Data on 31,000 Liechtenstein Firms, Foundations and Trusts

Official confirmation from the Liechtenstein government (2 August 2026):

  • Unauthorised third-party access to the “Verzeichnis wirtschaftlich berechtigter Personen” (VwbP – Register of Beneficial Owners/register of economic beneficiaries).
  • Data copies relating to around 31,000 legal entities (Rechtsträger: companies, foundations and trusteeships) were obtained. The exact number of natural persons affected is not yet known.

Key points from the government media release and consistent reporting:

  • Timing: Unauthorised digital access occurred in the night of 29/30 July 2026 (night into Thursday). The Office of Justice noticed irregularities the same day; the system was taken offline and secured. The government was informed on 31 July; confirmed results of preliminary investigations reached it on the afternoon of 1 August.
  • Impact: Copies of data were taken. There are currently no indications that data in the system was altered or deleted. The register is temporarily unavailable to external users via the LLV.li website.
  • Data involved: Details of beneficial owners of the legal entities (reports specify items such as name, first name, date of birth and nationality). The figure of 31,000 refers to legal entities/Rechtsträger, not necessarily the exact number of natural persons.
  • Purpose of the register: Maintained to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing (implements the 5th EU Anti-Money Laundering Directive; law in force since 2021). It is not a fully public register.
  • Response: A crisis team (Krisenstab) was set up, led by Prime Minister Brigitte Haas and Justice Minister Emanuel Schädler. Goal: investigate fully, inform affected parties promptly, and take countermeasures. An information point was established (email: vwbpfragen@llv.li). It is treated as a personal-data breach under GDPR Art. 33 (notification of affected persons under Art. 34). No ransom demands reported in the initial statements; no public indication yet of data appearing on the dark web.
