A UK court has fined NatWest £265m.
14/12/2021
The details behind the NatWest case are jaw-dropping:
- Cash was paid into around 50 branches, but no suspicions were raised.
- One deposit of £700,000 was carried through a shopping mall in black plastic bin liners, which were stuffed so full they split and had to be re-bagged in the branch.
- Some branches had so much cash deposited it wouldn't fit in their safes
The most interesting revelation is that staff at a NatWest cash centre had complained about the large quantities of cash being deposited had a “prominent, musty smell, indicative of long storage, rather than business use”.
